Aquamarine Meaning: The Calming Stone of the Sea

Living on the Oregon coast, we have a soft spot for aquamarine. Its name comes from the Latin aqua marina, "water of the sea," and once you have seen a good piece next to Yaquina Bay on a clear morning, the name makes complete sense. Here is what the stone has traditionally meant and how people bring it into their homes.

What aquamarine is

Aquamarine is the blue-to-blue-green variety of beryl, the same mineral family as emerald. Its color comes from iron, and it ranges from the palest sky blue to a deep sea blue, with the clearest, most saturated stones coming from Brazil, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Pakistan. It is hard (7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale) and usually quite clean inside, which is why it has been used in jewelry for centuries. It is also the March birthstone.

Aquamarine meaning and history

Roman sailors carried aquamarine as a talisman for safe passage and calm seas, and that association with calm has stayed with the stone ever since. Today people turn to aquamarine for:

  • Calm under pressure. It is traditionally the stone for a racing mind, a big conversation, or a stretch of worry.
  • Clear communication. Many traditions tie it to the throat and to saying what you mean, gently.
  • Letting go. It is often chosen during grief or after a hard chapter, as a stone of release and fresh water.
  • Protection for travelers. The old sailor's meaning still holds for anyone who spends time on or near the water.

Aquamarine vs. blue topaz

These two are often confused, and some inexpensive "aquamarine" is actually irradiated blue topaz. Aquamarine tends toward a softer, slightly greenish blue, while treated topaz is usually a brighter, more electric blue. Aquamarine also shows faint color shifts when you tilt it. If a price looks too good for the color, ask the seller which stone it is.

Where to place aquamarine at home

  1. Beside the bed. A soft light through aquamarine chips is one of the gentlest ways to end a day, which is exactly what a crystal tree lamp is for.
  2. On a desk. A small tumbled stone within reach is a quiet cue to slow down before you reply to that email.
  3. In the bathroom. It is the sea stone; it is at home near water, light, and a few shells.
  4. By the door. A nod to the old traveler's talisman for anyone heading out on the road or the water.

Caring for aquamarine

Aquamarine is durable and does not fade easily. Clean it with warm water and a drop of mild soap, and keep it out of harsh household chemicals. Our Little Book of Crystal Meanings walks through cleansing and pairing if you want to go further.
